Inner work
Inner work: habits, ego, and spiritual psychology
Inner work, in practical Gnosis, means watching mechanical habits — anger, craving, pornography, the urge to escape — without feeding them. Some lectures use the language of addiction, temperance, alcohol, or cannabis. That is spiritual psychology. It is not medical care, detox, or a diagnosis. If a habit has become dependence, treatment comes first.
If you arrived with something to change
This school names pornography explicitly: it fuels lust and mental images that block meditation. It also names intoxicant “I’s” — including alcohol and other drugs — and anger as a mechanical flash. Sleep is a field of work, not a cinema. That is not a clinic. If you want to change one of those things — or if the month is so loud the sitting cannot start — and you have never heard of Gnosis, start in plain English:
- I want to stop watching porn — and the curriculum map Pornography, lust, and spiritual practice (care first; not a clinical cure)
- I want to quit smoking weed
- I want to stop drinking alcohol — alcohol withdrawal can kill; that path says so first
- I want to stop exploding — anger, ego, and a week of noticing; not anger-management therapy
- I want to sleep better — rest and a dream notebook first; then the walked dream yoga path. Not sleep medicine, not astral hype
- I want to simplify my money so I can practice — ducks in a row, not a finance brand; educational tools only
Glorian’s primary porn article is Does pornography affect spirituality? (opens in a new tab) . The action path, catalog of terms, and grouped outbound curriculum live on I want to stop watching porn; the long map is Pornography, lust, and spiritual practice. That is spiritual psychology — not a clinical cure. The full list of help paths is I want to change.
What the schools mean by “I’s”
The practical stream associated with Samael Aun Weor describes a psychology of many “I’s”: anger, lust, fear, vanity, the part that wants to numb out. The work is to observe them in ordinary life and not identify with every impulse. Core public texts include Glorian’s Treatise of Revolutionary Psychology (opens in a new tab) and The Great Rebellion (opens in a new tab) . Those books remain with their publisher. We do not reprint them. If the question is the flicker of “I have been here,” start with Déjà vu, return, and recurrence — memory-conflict research beside this stream’s free chapters on return and recurrence.
A lecture that discusses intoxicant egos and observation — Gnostic psychoanalysis, part 2 (opens in a new tab) — and Chicago Gnosis’s Arcanum 14 — Temperance (opens in a new tab) are useful framing. They are not a withdrawal plan.
Habits versus dependence
A mechanical habit you can watch is one thing. Substance dependence, trauma, psychosis, or a crisis is another. Nothing on this site is medical, psychiatric, or addiction treatment. Do not use ego-annihilation language as a reason to avoid licensed care. The full disclaimer is the legal and safety page; the callout above is the short form we repeat wherever this topic appears.

A sober first step
Begin with self-observation in ordinary life — not with a heroic vow. The ordered map is the walked path at inner work: a help door if you need one, daytime noticing, name the mechanical I, then one chapter. Pair it with the quieter doors if you want a body for the work: meditation (ethics track: yama and niyama) and breathing ice. A private self-observation notepad stays on this device. The hygiene of the dwelling — trash, dishes, a quieter room — is home cleansing. Meals, in this school’s later teaching, are a diversified plate rather than a kitchen religion: diet ice. A sealing gesture — not a costume rite — is rituals ice. Daily devotion, distinct from mantras and from conjurations, is prayers ice. Stars and signs, in this school, are a map of influences rather than a fortune: astrology ice. Hermetic words — thrice-great, emerald, as above so below — are an adjacent stream this map labels, not a home laboratory: hermeticism ice. The overview of the practice rooms is Gnostic meditation and inner practices.

Some year-cycle days inherit this caution. That is intentional. About the year cycle explains the shape; it is not a completion badge.
When you are ready
If you arrived with a habit — pornography, cannabis, alcohol, anger, sleep — or a month too loud to sit, start in plain English. The inner-work walked path is the ordered map when you are ready for stages and one chapter.
